Re: Latest Ebay stuff: Captured Fw 190 D-9 and He 111 in Plauen, Saxony
I have tried to sharpen & clean the tail from that small scan as good as possible but it still doesn't show much detail & one could easily misinterpret the digits in many various ways... it looks like 500610 but you could easily read it as 550618 too, no matter how wrong it could be. |

Re: Latest Ebay stuff: Captured Fw 190 D-9 and He 111 in Plauen, Saxony
After blowing the FW190 pic up on a big screen, to me the second digit looks much more like a 3 or a 5 than a 0. I'm not aware of any serial number batches starting with 53, sooo .....
Could it possibly be a serial starting with 630? Say 63061x? Would they have got to the 630600's? 50061x sounds most plausible, but just doesn't look right to me. Cheers Peter |

Wow! That is so much better quality scan than the one from ebay! Thanks for this. Did you purchase the photo on ebay (if it's not rude to ask) or you have sourced it from elsewhere.

This just goes to show how much small details be be distorted in a bad photo reproduction. Perhaps the other images presented earlier were scans and the level of detail was limited by the scanner. Whatever it was, I don't think I'll ever try to guess again ..........

thanks for the replay Jasate. I feel happy for bringing the 2 years old post back to the top...
And PMoz99 - guessing is not bad. Many times it leads to deduction & brainstorming... and those are never bad especially in lack of better images. i.e. if we put all possible W.Nr.s (in case we didn't have the great scan presented above) and then experts eliminate all those that do not fit for various reasons - we could come to a precise conclusion... |

Re: Latest Ebay stuff: Captured Fw 190 D-9 and He 111 in Plauen, Saxony
Milos, that is precisely what I did before I had access to the higher quality photograph.
What you can clearly tell from photo: - Dora - Late-production Mimetall camo (Possibly WNF, although unlikely, but; ) - Werknummer in Mimetall font - Numbers 61 can be clearly seen, 50061x, last digit has a round shape - 500613 and 500618 are already well-documented JG26 Doras, both "Black 10" - Barring any dark smudge or similar distorting factor below the last digit, only option left is 500610 Of course, always better to be sure. Naturally, less compressed and higher resolution photographs are more than welcome, in any case.

Re: Latest Ebay stuff: Captured Fw 190 D-9 and He 111 in Plauen, Saxony
I believe we would need a good Fw 190 database. With two amazing double volume books from Eagle Editions & JaPo - we have things quite sorted when it comes to Doras... Now if a group of people would sit and do similar thing regarding the A/F/Gs (combined with Dora and Ta 152s) and eventually in open source approach where people could contribute with their data - wouldn't that be an amazing thing.
Then deduction would be even easier. For instance I only have secondary sources & no databases of my own and digging to find about 500618 (which for me in one moment looked like correct W.Nr.) would take time. If there is a database - make an input and vuala! I have to bring all the books over to China, bringing a suitcase or half every time I visit home or someone comes visiting. Best M |
