Re: Louis Cordes

Tom: although plenty of secondary accounts indicate otherwise, there doesn't seem to be any record in primary sources that John Jackson was credited with a victory in air-to-air combat during his leadership of 75 Sqn at Moresby.

Re: Louis Cordes

You are right, Bruce. The claim appears to be apocryphal. Although it is listed in Aces High there is no mention of such a claim in the 75 Sqn. ORB. Curiously although listed in the appendix of RAAF claims in Mark Johnston's Whispering Death, there is no mention of any such claim in the narrative of Jackson's death.

Cheers,
Tom

Re: Louis Cordes

I just realized that I left Levi Chase out of the list of American aces with victories against German, Italian, and Japanese aircraft.

Enjoy!

Frank.

A little on Levi Chase here:

This write-up includes a bigger version of the Robert Capa photo and further links at the bottom of the page.

The C-47A in question was "X-23" of the 39th Troop Carrier Squadron. Its serial number appears uncertain.
Appearntly his girlfriend was aboard on that C-47A, these two got married later
