JG2 and JG53
Hi,
I am commissioning a piece of artwork depicting the daylight attack on Brest on July 24th 1941 in which 218 Squadron was involved. I want to ensure that the depiction is historically accurate in regards of marking for the Bf109's. Can anyone please direct me to a reliable source where I can get examples of the Bf109 which were operational at this time, July 1941. Also what marks would they have been Bf109E or F? Any help much appreciated. Steve

Re: JG2 and JG53
Dear Steve,
I do have the 3 volumes of JG 53 History by Dr. PRIEN. Those books do have hundreds of pictures of machines of the "Pik Ass" Squadron. Unfortunately they are not at hand now, but stored some 400 km away. MAYBE he can help you... Regarding the JG 2 machines, do have seen quite a number of pictures (interesting) on: 1- La Luftwaffe attaque à L'Ouest (HEIMDAL) 2 - The aircraft of Luftwaffe fighter aces - 2 volumes I do not have, but MONBEECK wrote several books about the JG 2. He too may have something to help you. > https://www.amazon.com/Skies-France-.../dp/293054600X Another member of this Fórum is Simon Schatz > https://luftwaffe-aviation-art.blogs...itt%20Bf%20109 I do NOT know though if he made aviation art from that period (1941). You can contact him directly Most humbly yours Adriano S. Baumgartner, ASV 00.344 |

Re: JG2 and JG53
Steve
If you have any specifics (like weather as I have photos of Wellington's en route that Day), PM me. The 7 JG 2 losses (from 1, 2, 3./JG 2) were all E-7s. The only 100% loss for 2.Erg./JG 53 was an E-7 whilst an E-1 suffered a landing accident |
