Blenheim Z5753 or Z6244 404 Sqdn 19Oct41

An anomaly on the Form 540 and 541 T-Tommy Z5753 although presumed missing on 19 October with Barber, Gillam and Shaw crashing onto the foreshore at Lerwick the Squadron records also has Z5753 listed as being flown of 20 December 1941 when W/C Woodruff shot down a Junkers 88.

Going through the ORB it would appear that the Blenheim could be Z6244 (one of the eight 'B' Flight aircraft at Sumburgh) which does not reappear on Form 540 after 13 October 1941 or it could still be Z5753

Graham Warners Book and Notes has it as Z5753.

Crew lost:

Irvine Barber RCAF
Ernest Gillam RAF
J. Shaw RAF ?

Any help appreciated

Regards

Andy Bird

Re: Blenheim Z5753 or Z6244 404 Sqdn 19Oct41

Hello Andy,

The F.78 for Z5753 shows no other unit or movement after 404 Squadron. On page 2 under the 'Extent of Damage' column is '19.10.41 F.B.' and several more letters which I cannot make out. Below that is '1.11.41 SOC' by authority of 404 Squadron.

The F.78 for Z6244 only has page 1 on the microfilm reel unfortunately. Again somewhat hard to read but it may have gone for repair in November 1941. This has 'Cancelled' and 'Recat. A' written across that entry, followed by another repair organisation in December 1941. It must have survived because it went to the Fleet Air Arm in November 1942 and was still with them two years later (Lee-on-Solent).
The last details from 'FAA AIRCRAFT 1939-1945' by Ray Sturtivant and Mick Burrow.

Regards,

Martin Gleeson.
