Loss 115 Squadron Wellington Z8844, 13-14.10.1941

Dear all,

Who can enlighted me with a few aditional details on the loss of 115 Squadron Wellington Z8844, which was lost to Flak near Oppau on 13-14 October 1941. Was the a/c engaged in an operation to Nürnberg or München, and what was the size of the raid on Nürnberg or München on this night?

Thanks, Theo

According to this link (search for Z8844 on the page), the a/c was going to Munich.

Thanks Richard -strange to note though that the I&T Report for the night does not mention any raid on either München or Nürnberg, nor mentions the loss of this Wellington ..

Cheers, Theo

Re: Loss 115 Squadron Wellington Z8844, 13-14.10.1941

Crew initially buried at Worms-Weinsheim as per CWGC Concentration Report. Chorley BCL incorrectly shows pilot as DeardOn, whereas CWGC show family as DeardEn. (Correction made)

Bomber Command War Diary shows 53 Wellingtons and 7 Stirlings sent to Dusseldorf on 13/14 October.. !! 116 Sqdn website quotes the AWM as stating
Quote:
A Missing Research & Enquiry Team reported "The aircraft was on its way to the target at Nuremberg, when it was hit by ack-ack fire from the I G Farben works at Oppou [sic] and it crashed near Friesenheimer Insel, a small island in the nearby Rhine.
These places were about 3 miles from Ludwigshafen which is on the Rhine near Mannheim. One of the bombs on board exploded and all the crew were killed." Info: www.awm.gov.au
Worms Weinheim cemetery is about 17 km north of the crash site.
BCWD shows 1 aircraft lost, but 2 Wellingtons in BCL (T2846 which was going to Dusseldorf).

Re: Loss 115 Squadron Wellington Z8844, 13-14.10.1941

Z8844 was actually lost on night of 14-15.10.41

115 Sqn sent 11 Wellingtons to Nurnberg, 7 claimed to have bombed target, three an alternative target and Z8844 failed to return

The raid consisted of 58 Wellingtons, 5 Halifaxes, 4 Stirlings and either 13 Whitleys (if use BC figures) or 12 Whitleys (if use Sqn ORBs)

Regards

Martin
