NEI aircraft losses Java 1942

Hi guys

Hopefully someone can help with the following two queries regarding NEI losses:

1 January 1942: Lockheed L-212 lost while on patrol (possibly serialled L-217)

26/27 February 1942: DC-3 crashed Sumatra during flight from Australia with spares and munitions. I've since discovered that this was PK-AFZ. Crew killed but who were they?. The pilot was Capt Cornelius Blaak.. I've almost answered my own question!

Cheers
Brian

From Aircraft of the Netherlands East Indies Army Air Corps in crisis and wartimes, February 1937 -June 1942 by P.C. Boer, section on Lockheed L212A and L12A p 97
Quote:
During the execution of one such sea reconnaissance on January 1 1942 the L215 went missing in extremely bad weather near Banka. The aircraft and crew, consisting of Vdg R. Van Ligten, Vdg J. Winkels, Sgt (mechanic) P. Woortman and SLd (student aviation wireless operator) D. Mozes could not be found anymore and remained missing. These were the only losses suffered by the unit [Vk. A.4] during the war days
p 101

L215 del. 150240; 0741-1241 D.V1.A; c. 091241 transferred to Vk.A.4 at Kalidjati; 010142 missing on a sea reconnaissance flight from Kalidjati near Banka (the crew of four, pilots Vdg R. Regarding the DC-3, it took off that day with two other aircraft, PK-ALO and PK-ALT. The destination I have for PK-AFZ is Batavia. The aircraft was operated by KNILM. The Radio Operator was Pieter Pronk. That is all I have.

Re: NEI aircraft losses Java 1942

Brian,

According story on https://ilibrariana.wordpress.com/20...gsslachtoffer/ the DC-3 also had M. Veenendaal (mechanic) and KNILM-pilot H.W. Nieuwdorp on board.

DC-3 made a crash landing due to fuel starvation 30 km S. of Palembang.

Blaak may have been killed by hostile Sumatrans, badly injured Pronk killed by Japanese, but text offers other opinions about the circumstances of their deaths.
Of Veenendaal there was no trace. Nieuwdorp went for help into the jungle, only never to be seen anymore.

Regards,

Leendert
