Ju 188 loss

Can someone give me the details of a Ju 188 lost around 01:00 on 21/22 March 1944 to the guns of S/L Bunting

Thanks in advance.

Re: Ju 188 loss

Osprey 9 says more or less the following:

Mosquito crew were directed to a contact, which was Ju 188 E-1 3E+BK of 2./KG 6 (Leutnant G. Lahl). Mosquito chased e/a through tight turns and steep climbs before firing multiple bursts from 250 yards astern. E/A crashed and exploded near Butlers Farm, Shopland, Essex, with four crew KIA and one POW.

Aces High gives the location as Great Wakering.

Also note that Bunting and his radar operator (F/L C.P. Reed according to another of Martin Bowman's books) also shot down a Ju 88 at about 00.45, details here:

Cheers,

Mark

Re: Ju 188 loss

The entry in The Blitz - Then & Now (vol.3, p.352) gives the W.Nr. as 260326.

Of the crew only Uffz.E.Kosch survived after baling out injured.

Re: Ju 188 loss

Don't suppose anyone knows the target for the aircraft/gruppe that night, or is that pushing my luck too far?

Re: Ju 188 loss

Cheers Dave, duly added to my notes.

Adam, I believe all the Luftwaffe aircraft in the raid were sent to attack London. Whether or not they had specific targets within London, I don't know.
