Fw190 losses on 20 June 1944 Dreux area

Hi all,

I´m looking for Fw190 losses on 20 June 1944 in Dreux area in combat with No 19 squadron Mustangs, which claimed 2 destroyed and 6 damaged Fw190´s.

No 19 squadron lost in this combat one Mustang (FB233) of P/O F. D. Schofield (RCAF) who succesfully evaded and returned to unit.

any idea is warmly appreciated

Munro

Re: Fw190 losses on 20 June 1944 Dreux area

Hi all,
one of possible candidates for 20 June 1944 Fw 190 losses over Dreux Area:
Uffz. Wilhelm Senner of 8/JG54 in Fw 190A-8 Werk# 170666 "Black 1" shot down over St. André-de-l'Eure. Unfortunately I have no time data of this loss for comparison with allied reports.
TIA
Munro

Re: Fw190 losses on 20 June 1944 Dreux area

I humbly do quote from that magic piece of Historical Research that is the "2nd Tactical Air Force" pg. 171 - Volume 1 by Christopher Shores and Christ Thomas:

"...Mustangs of 19 Squadron had set out to bomb marshalling yards at Rambouillet. Before the attack could be made, 16 Fw 190s of III./JG 54 were seen over Dreux and bombs were jettisoned so that the Mustangs could give battle, which they did at 16:30hs. Sqn Ldr W.M.Gilmour claimed one and one damaged, as did four other pilots (Fw 190 damaged). However, Plt Off ED.Schofield was shot down, but managed to evade capture. One JG 54 Fw 190 was lost, but the Germans severely overestimated the results which they believed they had achieved, claiming no fewer than eight P-51s shot down! Four of these were claimed by Hptm 'Bully' Lang".

So, it seems both sides overclaimed quite a lot on that battle. The 19 Squadron pilots claiming no few than 2 victories and 6 Fw 190 damaged. The Luftwaffe airmen seems to have claimed 8 victories (for only one loss)...

Adriano,

thank you very much for your kind explanation. It really seems that both sides overclaimed quite a lot on that battle.
