Re: Jabo staffel JG 27

Jack,

As for the 10.(Jabo)/JG 27 emblem, courtesy of Franck Benoiton, I have a couple of photos of a Bf 109 F-4/trop coded "Yellow* 10" sporting a stylized bird in white carrying a white aerial bomb on a colourless disc outlined in white, sported under the aircraft cockpit. On the aircraft nose there is the III./JG 27 emblem, and on the aft fuselage a wavy bar of the III. Gruppe.

The aforementioned emblem might have been the elusive 10.(Jabo)/JG 27 emblem.

Regards,
Sinisa

Re: Jabo staffel JG 27

Sinisa, that sounds intriguing. Is the bird cartoon like or more sinister looking?

Have these photos ever been part of a publication?

regards,
Jack

Re: Jabo staffel JG 27

Jack,

It is a stylized bird, neither sinister nor cartoon. Basically, oversized wings and small body.

I cannot tell whether the photos were published before, or otherwise. Perhaps in the Jagdwaffe series of books? They were circulated among the enthusiasts though, of that I am sure.

Regards,
Sinisa

Re: Jabo staffel JG 27

I've both Jagdwaffe books that deal with North Africa and the Mediterranean, but neither have photos of 10.Jabo/JG 27. The authors only allotted a few entries about it's initial formation some strength numbers.

----------------------------

Is the bird recognizable, such as an eagle, similar to KG 53 emblem?

Jack

Re: Jabo staffel JG 27

Jack,

the idea is there, but the bird is not seen in profile, but kind of diving toward a spectator, both wings visible. All in white.

Sinisa

Re: Jabo staffel JG 27

In Die Jagdfliegerverbände der Deutschen Luftwaffe 1934 bis 1945, volume 8/1, by Dr Jochen Prien et al, there are three photos of a/c from 10(Jabo)/JG 27 (pp 359-361). none of these shows the whole a/c.

Re: Jabo staffel JG 27

natttuppen, for those three photos, do any of the details that are visible support Sinisa's description of yellow 10? thx!

------------------------

Sinisa, about the other markings compared to the colour profile I had posted:

- white theater band narrow or wide?
- does the white nose extend to the front cowl?
- the aircraft number and gruppe symbol, are they outlined in black?
- is the aircraft number large in height or normal compared to the balkenkreuz?

Now back to the jabo emblem:
- does the bird have eyes?
- are the wings symmetrical, meaning they are mirror image of each other?
- does the wing shape conform to the outer edge circle?
- does the image touch the outer circle at all?
- are feather shapes present on the trailing edge of the wings?
- is the bird's body attached to the wings?
- does the bird's body overlap the bomb?
- does bird have claws clutching the bomb?
- does the bomb have any fin detail?

Sorry for all the questions, but I want to design my own decal for a future 109 build.

regards,
Jack

Re: Jabo staffel JG 27

Jack,

I am very sorry, but I cannot answer all those questions of yours.

What you need is a photo of the aircraft, and I cannot post it because I don't have permission to do so.

Sinisa

Re: Jabo staffel JG 27

Understood.

I will more than likely go ahead with the project. As it happens more often than not, once it is complete and posted on the net, some aftermarket decal manufacture, or even a kit brand, will come out with the proper research.

regards,
Jack

Re: Jabo staffel JG 27

Jack,

The white theater band is wide with the staffel insignia on it, the insignia as per posts numbers 3 and 4 here. None of the photos shows the nose of the a/c. Individual a/c numbers are shown on two of the photos: black 8 and black 9, size normal compared to the Balkenkreuz. Neither the 8 nor the 9 is outlined. The 8 is positioned in front of the Balkenkreuz, as seen from the nose of the a/c, and the 9 between the Balkenkreuz and the theather band. The distance between the 9 and the theather band is very narrow indeed, the 9 almost touching the theater band.
