Lt. Sir Donald Gibson, KCB, DSC, RN

Hi,

I'm searching on a Fulmar Mk. I, that served in the No. 803 Sqn, probably in march-april 1941. It is the 6J (N4129), flown by Lt. Sir Donald Gibson, KCB, DSC, RN. Did he have some air victory?

Which was the name and rank of gunner that accompanied him in that times?

Thank's a lot!

Franklin

Re: Lt. Sir Donald Gibson, KCB, DSC, RN

This listing on Donald Cameron Ernest Forbes GIBSON, is from Christopher Shores' book “Those Other Eagles”.

Gibson flew Skuas and Fulmars with No 803 Squadron in the Mediterranean. He shared a He 111 and 2 SM79s destroyed, and 1 SM79 shared damaged and a D520 individual probable while flying Skua L2897 (A7P). At that stage No 803 Squadron was based on HMS Ark Royal.

He subsequently flew Fulmars when No 803 Squadron reformed on these aircraft and were based on HMS Formidable. He shared a Ju88 destroyed while flying Fulmars.

There is no mention of aircraft N4129, however Gibson was wounded in the arm on 18 April 1941 while attacking two SM79s. He crashed while attempting to land in Fulmar 6J (N2006). His observer, Sub Lt Peter Ashbrooke was killed in the crash.

Hope this is of some help.
