Loss of airman over England August 1942
Hi,
Could anyone tell me more details concerning the loss of a Unteroffizier Heinz Schmidt who was killed on the 10th August 1942 over England. I know he was a bordfunker in a bomber squadron and possibly involved in the attack on Colchester but would like to find out in which unit and details about aircraft and other crew. with thanks Rick |

Re: Loss of airman over England August 1942
Hi Rick,
From Luft. Loss Returns Do217E-4 F8+EC II/KG40 5478 Ff Ofw Helmuth Metz m-+, B Ofw.Paul Olbrich m-+, Bf Uffz.Heinz Schmidt m-+, Bm Uffz. Willi Schmiedla m. The date shown is 10-8-42 but whether this was the 9/10 attack aimed at Peterborough (see Ulf Balkes KG2 book) or the 10/11th attack on Colchester I do not know. The bodies of Metz and Olbrich were picked up by the Germans while Schmidt was washed ashore Denmark, Regards Brian Bines |
