Loss of Sgt Stevens 66 Sqn 12 Aug 41

Can anyone confirm the fate (& initials) of the above pilot and crash location. I have a series of photos of what appears to be his crash-landed P7787/ LZ-P and am trying to be 100% certain

Sgt. Cyril George Stevens was made PoW at Groede and transferred to Flushing for interrogation and to start travelling to Stalag Luft III Sagan for an extended period of time.
His Mk.IIA (P7787) was hit by a series of 2 cm shells (out of a total of 786) fired by six guns of Leichte Flakabt.43/XI positioned near the lockgates at Terneuzen (time 13.11 - 13.15 hours). During the emergency landing the pilot suffered minor head injuries.
There were a lot of claimants for this victory like Oblt. Galland and Olt. Schmid - both from Stab/JG 26 - but this one, together with another Spitfire near Biervliet, was the victim of the above mentioned battery.

I have the Biervliet incident you briefly mentioned, Wim, as Sgt G D White of 152 Squadron.

Can you confirm, Wim, that this is correct? The other possibility is P/O Calvert - see below.

Do you have additional details of crash location/circumstances?

I also have another that day at Westerschelde, nr Breskens. I believe this must be P/O Calvert.

Can you confirm?

Chris. Thanks for that.

On the subject of 66 Squadron and missing details from ORB's, I have P8270 lost on an interception off the Devon coast on 5 September 1941. According to the ORB the squadron did nothing that day and I can find no casualty to match.

Any ideas??

Re: Loss of Sgt Stevens 66 Sqn 12 Aug 41

Well, all what I can add is that Mk.IIA (P8446) of 152 Sqn. became a victim of 43/XI as well. The a/c crashed at 13.12 hours near Biervliet whereby Sgt. George Desmond White's body was completely burned. He could not be identified and was buried as an unknown airman (initially) on 14 August at the Noorder begraafplaats (cemetery) at Flushing with full military honours.

Mk.IIA (P6793) of 19 squadron - withdrawal cover - was shot down in the Scheldt estuary obviously (according to Prien) by Olt. Ruppert who claimed a victory over a Spitfire at a position 20 to 25 km north-west of Walcheren island. Sgt. John Lennox Calvert remaining missing (RM 31).
