Re: Bf-109G with Gruppe Kmdr insignia

Not that I'm aware of... and, I repeat, the actual monastery buildings are up on a hill, and in no way a Bf 109 could be brought there.

P.S. Also, the presence of short palm trees in the photo could lead to some location in more southern Italy, like Calabria as Sicily itself.

According to the caption, it has been "perhaps" taken in the rear part of the Camaldoli (Neaples) Monastery in the late summer of 1943, but I seriously doubt it, since the Monastery is on a hill, and I have some reservations about the ability of a Bf 109 to taxi there...

So it is still open to debate the exact location, but not the source.

That suggestion isn't that stupid if we talk about the "monastero di San Gregorio al Celio" which is in Rome ( close to Circus Maximus) and part of the Monastic community of Camaldoli.... Possible? How far from Ciampino???

Huummm: 12,5km today.. In 1943? deep in the city? I don't think so. Via Appia is bordered by fields.. How it was in 1943?

Re: Bf-109G with Gruppe Kmdr insignia

San Gregorio al Celio is in the center area of Rome, no way...

It may simply be one of the many villas that abounds in Southern Italy and in Sicily.

Re: Bf-109G with Gruppe Kmdr insignia

Hello Marquis,

... Long time ago! But I haven't been conviced by comments received here; so the photo stood out of reach (10 minutes instead of habitual 5 sec!)

Here it is. Enjoy it!

Best regards, Franck.

Re: Bf-109G with Gruppe Kmdr insignia

Thanks a lot ouidjat!
Trying to determine the location: many details suggest that the building in the background was a private villa, at least originally, and not a monastery.

Re: Bf-109G with Gruppe Kmdr insignia

Marquis,

Yes, do it please! I think that building is important enough, hence does exist today.
At least, some have memories about it.
But Camaldoli (Naples/Napoli) I don't think so for the same reasons detailed by Ferdinando; though we have palm trees here in Santhia', VC, Piemonte I saw them this morning and can provide photos ... to Ferdinando.

Regards, Franck.

Re: Bf-109G with Gruppe Kmdr insignia

I can just see Gunther von Maltzahn descending down the steps of the villa, having had a sumptous breakfast after a lively evening, drawing on his kidskin gloves , as the Warts pre-flight his Bf-109G, getting ready to do combat over the Italian skies.
