Re: JU 88 R-1 searching info
It is my understanding that the R-1 and R-2 were derived from the C-6. The difference being the BMW engines BMW 801A and BMW 801D.

http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/document...rs-Ju88-R1.pdf
Lots of BS presented there. In mid 42 there was no A-1 production (A-1 produced until late 40 AFAIR). In mid 42 HWO was not producing Ju 88s anymore except 2 in July 42 (stopped in April 42 otherwise) |

Re: JU 88 R-1 searching info
Hi,
The Ju88R -series (from https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junkers_Ju_88) Improved heavy fighter or night fighter with BMW 801 engines developed from the Ju88C airframe. Ju88R-1: original designation was Ju88C-4/R1; as C-4, but with BMW801ML and FuG 212 Ju88R-2: original designation was Ju88C-6/R2; as C-6, but with BMW801TP and FuG 212 or FuG 220 and SN-2 The Ju88R-1 was built in a very small series as conversions of Ju88C-4 by JFM in 1942/43. The Ju88R-2 production run was as follows (these are AC acceptances by BAL during each month taken from C-Amt's Monatsmeldungen). Neubau (newbuilds) by JFM: 1943/Tot 60 AC 1944/01 33 AC 1944/02 52 AC 1944/03 39 AC 1944/04 03 AC 1944/05 00 AC 1944/06 01 AC TOTAL 188 AC Umbau (conversions) by MNH: 1943/Tot 18 AC 1944/Tot 17 AC TOTAL 35 AC The converted aircraft were Ju88R-1 and mostly R-2, for which a SN-2 -system was added by Menibum in Stendal. (So these are not additional AC to the 188 newbuilds). BR, Juha |

Re: JU 88 R-1 searching info
Hi Chris,
You pose an interesting question. If “MNH” is a Hersteller code, it would be: VDM (Vereinigte Deutsche Metallwerke) Lufthartwerke AG, Hildesheim (Hersteller mnh). However, if “MNH” is an acronym for the name of the company, it would be: Maschinenfabrik Niedersachsen (MNH) GmbH Werk Hannover-Linden u. Hannover-Wülfel [N] (Hersteller csh). As the company “MNH” is known to have been involved in modification of Luftwaffe aircraft, I think the latter is more likely. Respectfully, Steve Sheflin |

Re: JU 88 R-1 searching info
The Ju 88R-1 and R-2 seems to be a tricky one. My information is based almost entirely on the RLM-Flugzeug Prgeramm Nr. 222, 223, 224, 225, 226 and 227. The Ju 88R-1 was a part of the so-called conversion programme (Umbau Program) and show that only three Ju 88C aircraft were converted with BMW801G engines and then given the new designation Ju 88R-1. All three were built by Junkers.
However, the Ju 88R-2 seems to have been incorporated in the RLM Flugzeug-Programm as a genuine new production model equipped with BMW801TC engines. Its role being described as destroyer/night fighter. The total number of Ju 88R-2 ordered was 190. By the end of April 1944 Junkers had delivered 189 aircraft, the last came off the production line in May 1944. The confusion for some may be the 30 Ju 88R-2 taken from Junkers and transferred to a company abbreviated to MNH for the installation, among other things, of the Lichtenstein SN2 radar. These aircaft kept their original designation Ju 88R-2. The conversion programme ended with aircraft number 30 delivered in February 1944. |

Re: JU 88 R-1 searching info
Hi,
Yes, my mistake. "MNH" is indeed Maschinenfabrik Niedersachsen, not Menibum, Stendal. (The very same MNH did also 364 pcs of Ju88A-17 conversions.) As for the Ju88C_to_Ju88R-1 conversions by JFM, I also have 3 AC delivered to to IV./NJG3 between 01/1943 and 05/1943, so I quess that is all. The one in Hendon is thus truly one of a kind! I checked also the C-Amt's originals again regarding the acceptances of Ju88R/SN2 "umbaus" by MNH: 1943/Tot 18 AC 1944/01 4 AC 1944/02 9 AC TOTAL 31 AC So, it could be that one of these AC was an R-1 and the rest were the 30 R-2's... Can anyone shed any more light to the 60 R-2's delivered by JFM during 1943, what was their monthly split? BR, Juha |

Re: JU 88 R-1 searching info
The correct name of the conversion company was Menibum (Metallwerke Niedersachsen Brinkmann und Mergell) which was located since February 1941 at Stendal.
