I was reading the obit of this Ace recently and it stated that he flew 70 combat missions in 1943 /1944 while attached to the 4th Fighter Group USAAF, can anyone add information ? Did any other RAF , RCAF, pilots fly on attachment to USAAF Fighter Groups (always noted that Beurling should have been allowed to in many books)

Bruce-I believe his bio might help which was called Tommy Leader I think and yes other pilots did fly with the USAAF. Ray Duke-Wooley springs to mind

Thanks for that information.
I did see that book briefly when it came out but I do not recall any details of his attachment to USAAF being noted in any detail, I must see if I can get hold of it again to check.
I of course recall Duke-Wooley being Wing Leader at Debden and then leading the 4th FG during it's transition from Eagle Squadrons to USAAF.
I am sure some RAF/RCAF pilots did fly ops with the USAAF and claim victories' more digging by me required.

Warren Peglar (RCAF) had four victories while serving with the 354th FS, 355th FG.

Tommy Leader states that Dalton Morgan flew with the 4th FG for several months, and made numerous claims for destroyed aircraft. I have not been able to find any combat reports for him for this period in either the British or American records. Some day I will have to go through the 4th FG records to see if he is mentioned.

F/Lt. Eric H. Duke-Woolley flew on DS with the 362nd FS, 357th FG. He claimed one-half of a FW 190 damaged on the ground on August 18, 1944.

Thanks Frank, I have the Jeff Ethell book "Escort To Berlin" and it too has no mention of TDM or notes of any claims.

According to Aces High - Battle of France and Britain ace John Reynolds Cock was posted to the 93rd FS, 81st FG around Oct 42. It was only a brief stay before going to 222 Sqn RAF. I doubt he flew any operations and was probably attached for instructor duties. Cock was an Australian in the RAF (40674). Following above posting he was attached to No.1 Spitfire Wing in Northern Australia during 1943 as supernumery and instructor before returning to the UK and completing another tour flying Tempests with 3 Sqn RAF.

Hi all,

Was passing through and saw this thread; thought I could add a little to it.

We have been approached and/or asked about Tom Dalton Morgan's service with the 4th on more than one occasion. Here's what I can tell you.

Tom Dalton Morgan did not fly with the 4th Fighter Group at any time. There is no mention of him in any of the squadron histories, or daily mission listings.

On the Association website (http://www.4thfightergroupassociation.org), we have a roster of pilots (with brief bios) which lists anyone who flew a mission with the group. Anyone on detached service or flying as an observer that was listed in the squadron logs is there.

In addition to Raymond M.B. Duke-Wooley (who remained operational commmander of the group for a time after its transfer into the USAAF and I believe was the first Britsh pilot to earn the American DFC) there were a couple of other notable "guest" fliers.

The longest serving of these pilots was Roylance "Dutch" Henwick (RSAAF), who flew 28 misisons with the group in the summer and fall of 1944, earning an Air Medal. Group Captain Peter Wickham and Flight Lieutenant Andre Plisnier are two others who flew more than a few missions.
