RAF Ossington 8 August 1942

As per title;

8 August 1942 Air raid by unidentified enemy aircraft, 3 bombs dropped on RAF Ossington at 00.50, Nissen huts and an Oxford damaged. 01.10 4 bombs dropped near the runway.

AC2 E Harbour received lacerations to the face requiring 4 stitches at the SSQ before transferred to Newark Hospital
AC2 Colan received lacerations to his head while diving into a ditch to take cover, required 1 stitch at SSQ

Anyone knows of any aircraft that could be responsible, 7/KG2 had 7 Do217's over Nottingham around the time, 1 being lost.

Many thanks Shaun

Shaun

Without a logbook, this is the best you are going to get (taken from my latest book):

The next mission for 7 Staffel's Staffelkapitän was an attack on Nottingham taking off from Deelen at 2300 hrs on 7 August 1942. Seven crews of KG 2 received the order to attack an armaments factory in Nottingham. Rudolf Graf Thun Hohenstein's bomber was loaded with four ABB 500kg incendiary bomb containers and from Arnhem-Deelen, they flew at low altitude over the North Sea via Texel to the Lincolnshire coast just north of The Wash where they climbed to 2000m. It was then that they came under attack.

Note it was not just 7./KG 2

Thanks, Chris, wasn't sure if anyone else was active in the area at the time. Must have been 2 aircraft bombing? RAF Ossington, probably only 15 mile from Nottingham. Target being Royal Ordnance Factory in King Meadow Lane, Nottingham I take it.

I am afraid I have nothing further from the Thun Hohenstein family or Horst Arnscheidt who were captured that night
