AIR WAR 1942 by John Foreman with Winfried Bock

"Veteran aviation historian and author John Foreman continues his blow-by-blow history of the air war over Europe.
Joined by German historian Winfried Bock, John follows his mammoth 1,450 page, 4-volume, account of 1941 by detailing the actions of January to April 1942.
The hour-by-hour operations of every day and night are recorded with loss tables for RAF Fighter, Bomber and Coastal Commands, Fleet Air Arm, and the Luftwaffe in the west."

Re: AIR WAR 1942 by John Foreman with Winfried Bock

Got it this morning, so too soon to review it properly.

However, whoever proof read it might be looking for new employment soon.

E.g. page 18 is a good example. Moves, spelled movces. 133 Squadronmoved to Eglinto, with no space and the n missing! That is just in one paragraph.

I'm not used to so many simple errors in a printed book.

Martin

As a working book editor, it does happen. Even with auto-correct functions, books get rushed to meet deadlines. A "real" publishing company has 4 people review the text and edit it, and a proofreader. So, computers will not do the job for you.

I should probably explain a bit about these books. Although (as Wingleader) we sell these books (as they are a great reference work), John supplies us with a complete PDF created in an ancient program, (Pagemaker I think). As such we can't touch the text or formatting with risking destroying everything else so we effectively publish 'as is' and hope he's not made too many typos!

That will not do. It just won't. A mechanism should be in place to correct any errors.

Debowa

That is very disappointing. As the author you become word blind because you have read it so many times your brain knows what it says without actually reading the words properly. I have fallen prey to that one myself

Suggestion. Someone could read the text John supplies and tell him about any errors you find so that he can correct them. I know that is a crazy thought, but it might even work.

By the way Air War 1942 is not the first book I have bought from you with a high typo count. Another author another day.

Regards

Martin

Re: AIR WAR 1942 by John Foreman with Winfried Bock

Martin,

I am very familiar with word blindness. That is why we have people other than the author review the manuscript before it goes to press. In the days when dinosaurs roamed the earth, I learned how to paste in columns of text and paste in corrections on those columns. As computer programs became more complicated, conversion programs were developed to change one file format into another. Having the latest version of anything does not make one a better writer.
