Bf 109 K-4 Erla W.Nr. 570379

Hello,

As far as I know, only two Erla Bf 109 K-4 are documented. One of them was captured by American troops: W.Nr. 570379.

A photo was published at Falcon's Bf 109 Hangar.

Does anybody know where and by what US unit the photo was taken?

Thanks,
Roger

Roger,

The photo you refer to is noted as W.Nr. 570271. it was sold on eBay in July 2009 and, unfortunately, I didn't take notice then from which US unit was the photographing GI.

There is a fair chance to track this photo back thanks to worthpoint.com, a site dedicated to estimating antiques and collectibles. Interestingly for our field of study, they do keep a low res image of the original sale as reference. It is worth a try.

Cheers
Marc

Re: Bf 109 K-4 Erla W.Nr. 570379

Roger/Marc

I am a bit confused.
The website says WNr 570276!
Roger gives 570379 and Marc 570271.

I must confess I think 570276 is the best visual interpretation.
Are there any documents that favour any of your interpretation??

Cheers
Stig

Re: Bf 109 K-4 Erla W.Nr. 570379

Marc and Stig,
Prien lists Erla-built Bf 109 K-4/R6 WNr. 570362 as undergoing prototype testing. This, along with careful examination of the photo, suggests to me that the Erla-built Bf 109 K-4 in the photo with the GI’s is WNr. 570376.
Regarding possible US units that might be the source for the photo, here are four that I’ve documented so far: 2nd ID, US 1st Army; 688th TD BN; 69th ID, US 1st Army; and an unknown AAA outfit.
Respectfully,
Steve Sheflin

Re: Bf 109 K-4 Erla W.Nr. 570379

Well Steve

Cannot but admit you have a point.
However I still find that digit 3 much more looking like a digit 2, but "looking like" and "really is" are two highly different things.....which I have learned the hard way in the past.....

Thanks for the pointer Steve

Cheers
Stig

Marc,

Are you sure the sale of the photo occurred in July, 2009? I looked through Worthpoint and did not find it.

Best,
Ed

I am continuing to research Worthpoint and found this. For me, the exact type is not obvious.
