USAAF sorties over Romania June/July 1944

Hi Guys

Can anybody please enlighten me as to which dates the USSAF flew sorties over Romania in June/July 1944, what numbers, and what losses they incurred?and where if possible.

Grateful for any assistance.

Kind Regards

Johannes

Re: USAAF sorties over Romania June/July 1944

Hi Johannes,

You might start by Googling "P-38 Lightning's Blackest Day".

On 10 June the Romanian (yes, Romanian!) air force IAR81s gave USAAF P-38 Lightnings quite a drubbing.

Cheers,

Sid.

Re: USAAF sorties over Romania June/July 1944

Hi Johannes,

besides the P-38 raid, most of the 15. Air Force sorties (vs I Jagdkorps) in June/July 1944 were directed against primary targets in Vienna area and Hungary, some in southern Germany or Czech, but few over Romania to my knowledge

regards

Alessandro

Re: USAAF sorties over Romania June/July 1944

Thanks guys.

Am researching about Enrst Stengl and Friedrich Obleser each of 8./JG 52, Stengl claims two B-24's at this time, but no confirmation. Obleser claims nine including two viermots, however he submitted no paperwork. Other JG 52 pilots have entries on their abschüße liste, but likewise some unconfirmed. But I know June 1944 is the likely month.

Kind Regards

Johannes

The targets of the first two raids in the list were in Hungary at that time.

Re: USAAF sorties over Romania June/July 1944

Only on June 11,44 Uffz Stengl 8./JG52 shot down Fort "Cesspool Cedric" from Poltava, SSE of Focsani , which by the way was also claimed by Lipfert and Romanian ace A.Serbanescu , I can not see any B-24's or other Forts bought down by Stengl during June or July 44 nor any details on Oblesser .The relevance of the victory does not
lie into the loss of a single B-17 brought down by him or by his JG52 friends enroute from Poltava to Romania but the capture of the footage from Lt.McKay body (CCU1)
a photographer attached to this mission by CCU1 in Bari, who took on board and without permission from the Soviets aerial fotage of Poltava taken by him some time prior departure to Romania which later on led to the Luftwaffe precision bombing of Poltawa known later on as the the "Poltawa Disaster "

Re: USAAF sorties over Romania June/July 1944

"one B-24 of 325°BG lost" actually 1 P-51 of the 325th FG was lost with Lt. Joseph W. Warner
