Norway 1940
My brother was a Hurricane Pilot in 46 Squadron and having flown off the deck of Carrier HMS Glorious in May was in action in Norway until June 7th
As well as 46 Squadron, 263 Squadron were in action When HMS Glorious was sunk by Sharnhorst on June 8th there were 8 Pilots from 46 Squadron and 10 from 263 lost plus a number of support members in the RAF or seconded to the Fleet Air Arm The Three Ships Association [ GLARAC ] HMS Glorious and Destroyers HMS Acasta and HMS Ardent was formed to remember those lost and we are trying to include any relatives of 46 and 263 Squadrons I would be interested if anyone with knowledge of the RAF and Luftwaffe actions in Northern Norway in 1940 could add to our own information I do have some photographs taken when 46 was based at Bardufass Mark Andrew |

Re: Norway 1940
Dear Mark,
I am not an expert in this area but have you tried with any of the following sites: Norway during WW2 Forum http://www.f16.parsimony.net/forum28300/ Biplane Fighter Aces from the Second World War http://surfcity.kund.dalnet.se/ (a lot of information about 263 Squadron) Flyvrak, World War II Aircraft wrecksites in Norway http://ktsorens.tihlde.org/flyvrak/ Nordic aviation during WWII http://www.rafandluftwaffe.info/luftwaffe1.html (includes information about German losses in Norway) I have not read it but I assume the book ´Fledgling Eagles: Complete Account of Air Operations During the "Phoney War" and Norwegian Campaign, 1940´by Christopher Shores has a loot of information. Regards Peter |

Re: Norway 1940
Mark,
The book by Chris Shores, "Fledgling Eagles", is indeed the book to get. It covers in brilliant detail all British Squadrons active in the Norwegian campaign, and there are many references to 46 Squadron and it's activities. You should definitely purchase this book. It's a goldmine of facts and actions. |

Re: Norway 1940
Hi Mark,
Try: John Winton, Carrier Glorious: Life and Death of an Aircraft Carrier, Leo Cooper, London, 1986 It has been a while since I read it so I can't remember exact details but seem to remember it did mention names here and there. I don't have my copy to hand but you might also try the RAF Fighter Command Losses book for the relevant period. Again I don't know how useful, but you can try Derry's work on the campaign. It's on the net: http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/UN/UK/UK-NWE-Norway/ regards Adam |
