Smile Ju 88 C-6 crash in portuguese waters...

Reports from divers refer the presence in the south coast waters of Portugal, of a Ju 88 C-6, from V/KG40 brought down by RAF Hurricanes from Gibraltar, most probably on the 7th August 1943.
Any information please about this JU 88?

Thanks in advance

Best Regards

Fred

V./KG 40

Hello Fred

Could this be Ju 88 C-6 (W.Nr. 360 367) of V./KG 40 lost on 6 August 1943 over the sea due to aerial combat with the loss of Leutnant Max Wittmer (pilot), Unteroffizier Hugo Frank (radio operator) and Unteroffizier Georg Kurschatke (observer)? Unfortunately no specific location is given. The date may also be 8 August 1943.

Horrido!

Leo

Re: Ju 88 C-6 crash in portuguese waters...

Nothing was lost by V/KG 40 on 6 or 7 Aug 43 but on 8 Aug 43 Lt Max Wittmer-Eigenbrodt & his crew were shot down, probably in combat with a B-24D of 479 ASG which was also shot down, in PlQ 24W/1512 which puts it way off the NW coast of Spain not Portugal. The loss of the B-24 was 45.30N 09.20W; again same rough location. No Ju 88 C-6s of V/KG 40 were lost to Hurricanes or operated anywhere near Gibraltar

Could this be a Beaufighter which, without checking my records, was lost on 7 Aug 43. I will check tonight

On 7 Aug 43, 248 sqn lost a Beaufighter to FW 190s which, again, would not have been operating off the Portuguese coast
