Fw 190 stollen by Kid Hofer ( which unit ? )

Good night to all!
Most of you certainly do have read about Capt Kid Hofer ( 8th AF ace ) being shot down by Flak and of his late action when he stolle a Fw 190 from a nearby airbase and flew back to his base.
Did we have information about:
1- The unit from which this Fw 190 came?
2- The airbase?
3- Any information related to the werknummer and codes, if possible.
Thanks again for any help
Adriano

This story is believed to be fictional. Researched in depth on one of the boards, but I can’t remember which one.

Adriano,

It is a fake story. Hofer (who was a 1st Lt, not a Captain) was shot down with a Mustang (P-51B QP-X, serial no 43-6746) by the 4./ Flak-Regiment 9 near Mostar-Süd airport.

If you are interested in his life, check Troy White's book (Kidd Hofer - The Last of the Screwball Aces)

This actually sounds more like the claim of Bruce Carr to have stolen an FW-190 off an airfield, and returned to base in it several days after being shot down. It appears on his Form 5 as on May 8, 1945 and I have been told that the airfield was actually occupied by the British at that time.

Frank.
