Fw Herbert Böhling & crew 7./KG 3 Sep 44
According to some records, this ac crashed near Hankenberge on the night of 23-24 Sep 44. According to the VDK & NVM, the crew were killed 26 Sep 44 and buried at Bramsche (H is south of Osnabrück, B north) . Diver! (x 3) states that this was possibly the victim of Fg Off R A Henley of 25 Sqn but from what I can see, his kill was credited 24-25 Sep 44. There is a claim for a He 111 near Maastricht by 409 Sqn on 24-25 Sep 44.....Anyone unravel this?

Re: Fw Herbert Böhling & crew 7./KG 3 Sep 44
Little hard to be specific on this one, as you say the NVM gives the 26th while there are reports of V-1 attacks on the 25/26th with most incidents in East Anglia and on the 26/27th with incidents including a Key Point in Enfield . As regards RAF claims on the 24/25th there were 1/ W/O Fitchett with F/Sgt Hardy in MM589 of 409 Sqd. claiming a He 111 over Belgium they took off from St.Andre and landed at Lille with the Mosquito damaged by debris from their victim. 2/ Claim for a probable by F/O Henley with F/Sgt Hope of 25 Sqd at 2130 hrs position H 50. 3/ claim for probable by W/C Mitchell with F/L Cox of 25 Sqd at 0515 hrs in square J. The next RAF claim and Launcher losses I noted was on the 28/29th with two claims by W/C Mitchell at 0520 and 0545 hrs and two Launcher losses crews of Oblt Banneick St.Kap. and Uffz Duhring all missing on the 29th .
For Luftwaffe losses from NVMs on the 24th loss of crew of Oblt Bohnet and 25th loss of crew ot Ltn Denig all crewmen missing, linking to RAF claims on 24/25th ? On the 26th crew of Fw Bohling all killed in crash to unknown cause at Henkenberge I assumed this was a crash on the 26th not due to direct enemy fighter action . |

Dear Chris and Brian,
Following your interesting exchange (thanks to Brian I have a far better idea of the III./KG 3 losses during their 2 months in Venlo) I only can add that the He111 claimed 'near Maastricht' is not known among Dutch air war historians. Somewhere I have a pile of copies of aircraft losses in Belgium, will try to dig these out and check whether a He111 crashed in the general Belgian area around Maastricht. Keep up the good work ! Best regards, Marcel

Thanks Marcel. Maastricht 'loss' was not III./KG 3
