P-38 landed at Capoterra on 12 june 1943
In order to illustrate the similar thread I've begun some time ago, I post the picture of this aircraft I've mentioned.
The overpainted code seems to be from 71th or 94th Squadron (LM - UN). The picture was taken at Capoterra by S.Ten Pierpaolo Paravicini from 360a Sq. CT. before the aircraft was flown to italian mainland: he gave me it with some other shots. It has been published in 1981, with some other, in the italian magazine Aerofan and then in the book "Pantere", written by me with a friend and published in 2001. Till today the identity of this plane and of his pilot is not known. Gianandrea |

Re: P-38 landed at Capoterra on 12 june 1943
Gianandrea,
Great shot! Never seen this one of the P-38. I agree now that it probabbly is either LM (71st FS) or UN (94th FS). Which is good, because according to the list Andrew Arthy sent in, there are 1 71st FS loss and three 94th FS losses during June. There were two Pows from the 94th FS on June 20th. Its interesting to note that on June 5th the mission of the P-38s was to "hit A/Fs of Monserrato and Capoterra". On this date the 1st FG lost two P-38s;Lt Edward Shaw (27FS,POW) and Lt. Arthur Franke (71 FS.MIA) Carlos |

Re: P-38 landed at Capoterra on 12 june 1943
Carlos,
unluckily none of the known 1st FG losses matches with the informations from italian side. According to two bulletin issued from Army and Air Force, the aircraft landed in the late afternoon of 12 june: no losses recorded by 1st FG for that day. I'll try to find the name of the pilot. Best Regards Gianandrea |

Re: P-38 landed at Capoterra on 12 june 1943
I have found accounts of a P - 38 that landed at an Italian Air Base in Sardinia. It was used by an Italian Pilot Guido Rossi to shoot down several U.S. Bombers. he was shot down while attacking a B - 17 and ditched in Med , survived. Do you have any information?

Re: P-38 landed at Capoterra on 12 june 1943
Hi,
See my other threads on this. Some on the armyairforce.com site Several ends to the a/c so it seems. Dived into the sea. Bombed by US aircraft it ended up on the edge of the Airfield in Italy with all the other wrecks. Sent to the Luftwaffe Test centre and crashed. are but three. It may be that the Italians had more than one "G" model in captivity and the Germans also more than one. Alex |
