Re: Photo Nieuport

Hello,

Currently on ebay is a further Nieuport 17 in Italian service Ni.3606 of 81 Squadriglia at:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/WW1-French-...QAAOSwTrxfV7Z7

The photo is a reproduction, but new to me and a nice photo. This machine was captured by Ku K forces and received the LFT serial 00.60.

Regards,

Clint

Re: Photo Nieuport

Tricky this one Clint

Again it is a pity the photo is either badly scanned or very "weathered" and it is difficult to be 100% exact, but to me the fuselage seems more angular than on a regular Type 27, and I actually suggest a Type 24 in this case.

Checking "our" Dennis site I notice the great influx of Type 27 in the 5000 SFA range, but if you check them out you will see he actually has a Type 24 with SFA number 5887 and also a few in both the 59xx and 60xx range.

From that evidence it does look like Nieuport continued to build small batches of Type 24 for quite some time.

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photo Nieuport

Hi Stig,

I initially went with a Nieuport 27 as the type shown as that type was operated by Italy and the limited text shown is Italian. Furthermore, the serial is not incompatible with Nieuport 27 operated by Italy while 5887 appears to be a bit of an outlier statistically speaking on the Albin Denis site for the Nieuport 24 while accepting that later serials were used by the Nieuport 24. In terms of serials in the vicinity of 5887 both 5883 and 5889 were operated by 83 Squadriglia and were Nieuport 27 machines. So I'll stick with my initial id for the present, though I'm happy to change it in the light of further information - ideally a squadron attribution for 5871. It would also be nice to see the photo Albin Denis has used for the Nieuport 24 attribution for 5887.

Regards,

Clint

Re: Photo Nieuport

At least we can agree on it is not a Type 11 as the seller states.....

Re: Photo Nieuport

Hi Stig,

Yes that at least. I've been doing some further reading since my last post, specifically volume 2 of JM Bruce's Nieuport fighters and there are a number of references to machines that have features not totally consistent with being either fully standard Nieuport 24 or Nieuport 27s. So perhaps N.5871 is one such machine.

In any event I've ordered the WDF 167 Nieuport 24/27 at War. Hopefully it will contain some reference to N.5871.

Regards,

Clint
