Ju 52 loss, 17 February 1941

On 17 February 1941 a Ju 52 coded 4V+EH from 1. Staffel/Kampfgruppe z.b.V. 9 crashed in the Straits of Messina with its crew of four listed as missing.

Can someone provide me with the usual loss details, especially WNr and crew names ? I also wonder if there were passengers aboard.

Thanks in advance

Thanks Matti,

As Heinz Clausen is listed as killed rather than missing, I searched him on the Volksbund database, but no luck (for Clausen and approaching names for February 1941)

Re: Ju 52 loss, 17 February 1941

Hi Laurent,

in the GenQu. loss report from February 20, 1941 No. 16 Fw Clausen is listed as missing / vermißt. A correction is not noted.

The flight of the 7055 is registered as H (= Heimatverlust), not as F (= Feindflug).

Regards
Leo

Thanks Leo

With no burial place, the GenQu entry is maybe for once more accurate than Matti's data (that is usually from the NVM).

As for the flight being an Heimat one, I wonder if the majority of the flights of the transport units, even operational (ie transport of supplies and/or personnel), will be listed like that, only the missions over enemy-held area or close to them (like fuel ferrying to the advancing Panzer formations as done in France in 1940 and in USSR in 41-42) being listed as Feindflug.

The death of Clausen is noted in the NVM in hand-writing refering to a separate report. Please note that VDK has not yet added all the known losses into its database. If you don't find a name at VDK site, it is not a proof that this person is not dead.

Thanks for the additional info, Matti

Probably the body of Clausen was found at some point and the report reached the NVM but not the GenQu list.

As for the Volksbund database being incomplete, I sadly agree. Since I started to use it years ago, I have seen one major change for Kriegsmarine casualties, the ones lost at sea and commemorated now appearing while they did not before. But AFAIK there is no equivalent memorial for missing Luftwaffe airmen, lost at sea or not. Except some Luftwaffe crew members that were actually members of Kriegsmarine (with such rank as Lt zur See in naval patrol units).
