Matti

I don't think WNr 2579 was anything but a D-1 model, listed as such in all my sources.
The problem is with the report of the E-1. On a modern keyboard the letters D and E are very close together. If that was true for a German WW 2 typewriter, I don't know, but not impossible, meaning a typo writing E-1 instead of D-1 is within reason.

Of course it is perfectly possible the clerk made an error with the WNr itself but in this case it somehow feels logical there is a mistake between the D and E....

As usual thanks for the relevant details.

Cheers
Stig

Stig, you are following my thoughts. I have also believed that E-1 is simply a typo, because there was no Bf 109 E-1 with WNr. 2579, at least according to my notes.
I don't think that there is a mistake with the WNr. Most of the Zerstörerschule 2 Bf 109s lost in Autumn 1942 are D-1 and WNr. of half of them in 25xx series.
I wanted to use in my answer that type E-1 of the GQM list and add that other loss to give some basic background and the possibility of comparison.

Thanks Matti

Interesting with the other losses of ZS 2 being mainly D-1s.
Unless someone else comes up with something sensational, I believe we can be certain it was a typo, the E-1 should be a D-1

Cheers
Stig
