major Alexander Gillis VMF-311 in WW2?

I am interested in finding out more about WW2 flyers of the USN and USMC who claim victories in Korea.

I know that Plog was with VB-83 (SB2C), Amen was with VC-82 (FM2) and Lamb with VF-27 and 51 (F6F); the careers of Bolt and Glenn are well-known but I am especially interested in finding of this officer's flying career. I know he flew with VMF-311 and was assigned to the USAF to fly F-86 in 1952. I also know he flew in Vietnam but can anyone tell me if he flew combat missions in WW2 and if so, with which squadron and when?

The grave marker for Gillis shown on Find-A-Grave shows service in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. I do not know what unit he served with in WW2, and he made no claims in WW2.
