Re: I.D. for Wildcat flown by Digby Cosh, 881 Sqn, April 1944 against Tirpitz?
Thank you Simon, that's very helpful. I see from the Navy List both Wilson and Brander were also 881 Sqn. No joy for 896 Sqn on that occasion!

I have researched this combat in quite some detail and was lucky to get first hand accounts by the surviving FAA aircrew and have contacted the Grandson of the German pilot

Take a look at this previous thread on the subject of the 12.02.44 claims:
http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showth...hlight=brander It would appear then that the Canadians Cosh and Wilson shared the damage claim. Tom |

I for one would be interested to hear what info you have, if you're happy to share it. Was it published as per the BV-138 article in Flypast that also featured Digby Cosh? Regards Simon |

Re: I.D. for Wildcat flown by Digby Cosh, 881 Sqn, April 1944 against Tirpitz?
Chris
Hope you don't mind me asking, but I've found the following information online at a number of websites, but would be interested if it can be verified: On 12 February Convoy OS-67/KMS-41, protected by 881 Squadron (Lieut. Comdr. DRB Cosh, RCNVR) and 896 Squadron (Lieut. Comdr. LA Hordern, DSC, RNVR), HMS Pursuer, was attacked by seven He-177s from II.KG-40 carrying the Henshel Hs-293 guided missile. Defending F4Fs shot down an He-177, a snooping FW-200 and drove off the remaining He-177s. This brings up a few questions: Did they attack FW-200s and/or He-177s in the evening's encounter? Reading the combat report from Cosh, he wasn't actually sure what he was attacking in the darkness. And am I correct in thinking there were no actual German losses in the action? Were both 881 and 896 Sqn Wildcats involved? I also read that the Wildcats' return to land back on H.M.S. Pursuer were one of the first night time landings on a carrier, or is that apocryphal? Regards Simon |

Certainly apocryphal, as expressed so broadly, but it could perhaps be true for Wildcats, for the carrier (or perhaps even for CVEs), or for the pilots' concerned.

157 Sqn shot down the Fw 200; Wildcats shot down the He 177 and the successful pilots were as detailed earlier in this and the other thread

Re: I.D. for Wildcat flown by Digby Cosh, 881 Sqn, April 1944 against Tirpitz?
Hi all,
This thread came up while I was searching for reference material on 881 Sqn. and Canadian Wildcat pilots in general. There seems to be a wealth of knowledge here that is well beyond anything Google can turn up. Is there a place where I can find a listing of squadron codes? A number have been mentioned previously in the thread, but there is some confusing info. For example JV375 is referred to as "5O" and later as "V". I'd also be grateful if I can be pointed towards a resource that shows placement & colouring of the markings. Online, book, whatever. It's darned hard finding good, reliable images. The holy grail would be a photo with Cosh or some other Canuck in the cockpit, and the plane clearly identified... Thanks to anyone that's able to shed some light! |
