Luftwaff Units 1944

I am doing a painting of Duane Beesons P-51 "Bee" shooting down an Fw-190 over Aachen Germany 1944. I need the markings/colors or units that would have been operating in this area at this time. Can anyone help or direct me to this information??? I believe this would have been his 10th kill. Thanks in advance.

Re: Luftwaff Units 1944

Going by my reference material it was on Feb. 20th 1944 over Aachen. It was kill no. 10 for Beeson. My info does not say if it was an Fw-190d or a Radial 190. Thanks, Bill

Re: Luftwaff Units 1944

Beeson's ship on Feb 20 was QP-B 42-7890 P47D-1RE.

As the 10th air score on that day he would have likely had 'nine' in a row of five with a row of four below - all iron cross. The score was an Fw 190A likely a -7, D's didn't enter combat until late November and the 4th didn't get mustangs on ops until the 22(?) or 25(?) of Feb, 1944. ( Iwill have to chaeck on combat ops date with Mustangs)

Peter Randall's website - about halfway down has several photos of Beesons 47 and 51's.

There were no Fw 190D-9 aircraft operational in February 1944.

Re: Luftwaff Units 1944

I am needing possible unit markings/colors for the Fw he shot down. What luftwaffe unit would he have encountered over Aachen?? I have Beesons CORRECT markings, and need to know the 190s possible unit. Thanks Guys. Bill

Possibly this one. The only one listed from JG 26. JG 11 lost a lot but this area seems the closest match to Aachen.

Fw 190A-6, 470224, Hell, Uffz. Erwin, 6./JG 26, schwarze 2 + -, 20-Feb-44, WIA due to Luftkampf with P-47s from 4th FG. FSA., RLV, Caldwell, JG 26 War Diary, II, p.217, Luenebach-Eifel, 100%

Re: Luftwaff Units 1944

It DOES Pay to ask!! I almost made a fatal error in his aircraft. I need to have the action AFTER March 44 when he was flying the P-51. He didn't shoot down any 190s with the 'BEE" so my choices are one of the 109s a Ju-88 or an He-126. The P-51 is finished, and looks great. Now all I need is to get info on one of the aircraft he shot down, maybe the Ju-88 or He-126. Thank you so much for shaking my tree and opening my eyes. Bill
