Question ND561, Thyphoon, 181. Sqn

On 06.02.1945, S/L David Robert Crawford was shoot down and killed in his Hawker Thyphoon PD561, 181. Squadron.

I am searching for information, especially the crash site and circumstances of the crash.

According to my documents the first burial was on the new cemetery of the City of Minden.

Sorry for the error in the header!

Re: ND561, Thyphoon, 181. Sqn

Hello.

The incredible work and book "The 2nd TAF" (Vol.3), in pages 413-414 do confirm that this pilot was shot down in flames by FLAK, near Wietzen and killed on board of Typhoon IB, serial number PD561.

Do not know though which units were nearby (LW Flak? WH Flak?) or what was the target. Guess you may have to have a look at the relevant part of the ORB for 181 Squadron to guet your answer...the meteorological conditions, from where the attack came, etc....so you probably will have an idea WHERE the Typhoon crashed...

I have just telephoned with the cemetery office in the City of Minden. Crawford was buried in the local cemetery on February 10, 1945. From Wietzen to Minden it is about 60 kilometers. I guess, the crash site must be in the Minden area.
