KG2 Loss over Hull on 13.07.1943
Hi,
Can anyone tell me if a KG2 aircraft was lost over Hull on or near the night of 13th July 1943? If so, were the crew lost and who were they? Thanks Rick |

Re: KG2 Loss over Hull on 13.07.1943
The Do. noted by Chris crashed in Scarborough Bay at 01.25hrs on the 14 July. On the same raid, which had Hull as its target, Do.217M-1 (U5+IL/wnr56122) lost Uffz Hugo Pankoweit in somewhat unusual circumstances.
At 00.52hrs on 13 July (when Grimsby was the target), Do.217K-1 U5+EM/wnr4478 4/KG2 was shot down 10mls E of Humber by a 410 Sqdn Mosquito. The German crew as follows: Lt Hans Saliger (P), Gefr. Hans Dähler (BO), Uffz Walter Labinschuhs (BF) and Uffz Kurt Nürnberger (BS). If the name you seek is among the foregoing, let me know and I'll send fuller details. BN (www.billnorman.co.uk) |

As Bill says-12/13 Jul 43 Grimsby; 13/14 July 43 Hull. Take your pick! As Bill also says, Pankoweit/Pankuwiet BF to Stfw Wolk was killed following a collision with a night fighter

Re: KG2 Loss over Hull on 13.07.1943
Chris, I recently obtained evidence from a former member of 3/KG2 who knew Wolk and who was also on the Hull raid. He maintains that Wolk's aircraft was flipped over and damaged by a near AA burst on the approach to Hull. When Wolk finally managed to regain control, the cover over the BF's position was smashed and Pankuweit had gone. My source claimed to have been told this by Wolk.

Re: KG2 Loss over Hull on 13.07.1943
Interesting update. I wonder therefore why it was reported as a collision in the NVM? Willum Hoy reports that the Do 217 he attacked threw itself around quite a bit-another possibility?
