An impressively preserved DB605B 1. Although the magnesium parts have dissolved, the other parts are in very good condition. It would be interesting to know what has become of this part?

just powder... metal come back to mineral.

This nearly pristine DB 605 is nowadays preserved at the Florennes AB Spitfire museum.

Re: 'Unknown' Bf 110 recovered in Belgium!

Thanks ClinA-78. I did not find any photos on the Florrenes site but, it is very good if the motor is well preserved there! The way that the magnesium (Elektron alloy) has appeared to vanish in a fairly dry soil is unusual. Can you comment upon the soil conditions please? Often the magnesium seems to degrade into a type of hard white rock that makes dismantling very difficult. Also, it is strange that the motor seemed to suffer relatively little damage, yes the reduction gear is broken but, for the condition, I would have expected that this engine had only suffered a wheels up landing and then been kept in perfect storage! Do you think the motor was burried in the crash or, afterwards to tidy-up? Cheers
