Re: British Pathe and wrecked German a/c film

Hello,

Does anyone know where this salvage dump is? All of these a/c were apparently evaluated and studied at the RAE at Farnborough, which may be where this is. As noted above, the Bf109E with the victory markings is Oblt. Franz on Werra, the Adj of II./JG3.

According to the EOE Luft loss DB: "5 September 1940: Stab II./JG3 Messerschmitt Bf109E-4 (1480). Damaged in fighter attack, possibly by P/O G.H. Bennions of No.41 Squadron, during diversionary fighter sweep over Kent. Disengaged but pursued and eventually brought down by P/O B.G. Stapleton of No.603 Squadron. Belly-landed at Winchet Hill on Love’s Farm, Marden, 10.10 a.m. FF Oberlt Franz von Werra (Gruppenadjutant) captured unhurt. Aircraft Black < + — 100% write-off."

The first 109 is Brown 2 of Uffz August Klick, 3./LG2, down on 15 Sept. 1940. The "Mickey Maus" on the rear fuselage is insignia of 3./LG2.

"15 September 1940: 3.(J)/LG2 Messerschmitt Bf109E-7 (2058). Radiator damaged in fighter attack during escort sortie to London. Turned for home but engine seized so belly-landed at Shellness Point, Isle of Sheppey, 2.45 p.m. Possibly that engaged by F/O L.A. Haines of No.19 Squadron. FF Uffz August Klick captured unhurt. Aircraft Brown 2 + 100% write-off."

The 3rd 109 is Fw Werner Gottschalk, down 6.9.40:

"6 September 1940: 6.(S)/LG2 Messerschmitt Bf109E-7 (5567). Hit in petrol tank by AA fire from Chatham during bomber escort sortie. Made for home but forced-landed out of fuel at Hawkinge airfield 6.14 p.m. Further damaged by ground fire on landing. FF Fw Werner Gottschalk captured wounded. Aircraft ▲ + Yellow C 100% write-off.
Aircraft evaluated by the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough. Items originally in Brenzett Aeronautical Museum, said to be from this machine, now held by the Hawkinge Aeronautical Trust."

The Ju88 rear fuselage is 9K+HL of 3./KG51 down July 28, 1940, later repaired at the RAE.

"28 July 1940: 3./KG51 Junkers Ju88A-1 (7036). Crew lost their bearings and eventually ran low on fuel during a sortie to bomb Crewe. Jettisoned bombs over the Channel prior to belly-landing at Buckholt Farm, Bexhill, 5.14 a.m. BO Lt Willi Ruckdeschel, FF Oberfw Josef Bier, BF Uffz Heinz Ohls, and BS Uffz Martin Multhammer all captured unhurt. Aircraft 9K+HL 100% write-off.
This aircraft was transported to RAE Farnborough where it was allocated RAF serial AX919 and test flown on April 3, 1941. It was subsequently transferred to No.1426 (Enemy Aircraft) Flight at Duxford where it was used as a source for spare parts for another Ju88 (HM509). ‘Ikaria’ ball and socket MG15 gun mounting from cockpit canopy now in Tangmere Military Aviation Museum."

The He111 was this one:

"9 February 1940: 5./KG26 Heinkel He111H-3 (6853). Both engines damaged in attack by S/L A. D. Farquhar of No.602 Squadron during attack on convoy near May Island and tipped-up on landing at North Berwick Law 12.00 p.m. (Bf) Uffz Franz Wieners badly wounded in left thigh, died same day in RAF Drem station hospital, (Ff) Uffz Helmut Meyer, (Beo) Uffz Josef Sangl, and (Bm) Obergefr Heinz Hegemann captured unhurt. Aircraft 1H+EN 100% write-off.
This aircraft was made airworthy and impressed into service with No. 1426 (Enemy Aircraft) Flight bearing RAF serial AW177. It crashed at Polebrook on November 10, 1943, killing seven of the eleven on board."

Good still photos exist of all of these a/c, although there may be some good supplementary film frames on this posting.

Regards,
