French testing of German aircraft
Can anyone recommend a book, bibliography or report about the late-war/post-war French testing of Me262, He162, He274 or Do335 aircraft? Or the use of Fw190 (NC-900) or Ju88/188 by the AdlA? Optimistically - in English?
Regards, ...geoff

Re: French testing of German aircraft
There is this book, but in French:
http://www.amazon.fr/avions-allemand.../dp/2950948553 I don't have it, so can say anything about it. As for former German aircraft used by the French, I will also include Fi 156 and Ju 52. Concerning the Fw 190, the well-known regiment "Normandie-Niemen" was psot-war equiped with it for some time. Captured Ju 88 were used for recon and bombing missions against the German pockets on the Atlantic coast, with some losses. Captured Fi 156 were used in the Alps in spring 1945 to fly recon, supply drops and also attack enemy positions with grenades and so on. |

Re: French testing of German aircraft
According to Eric Brown, he flew an Ar240 that was under French control, but it doesn't appear in any list of types officially flown by the French that I've seen.

Thereis Philippe Couderchon’s 2-part article on the French use of He 162 in April and May 2006 Aeroplane, a British aviation magazine. Backnumbers maybe still available, the magazine has web-pages.

Re: French testing of German aircraft
Thanks Gents.
Laurent: I'm aware of the Airdocs Collections book. Had a chance to thumb through it 10 years ago, but my command of the French language - although restaurant-sufficient then, was/is not sufficient to have warranted the cost of the book. Graham: good call. I'd forgotten about Eric Brown. I'll look up some of his articles in Air International. Juha: thanks, I have that article in storage, along with the series on the Dornier 335. Now if I could only remember which box in the garage those magazines are sitting in! The books on Watson's Whizzers are great reads as well. As entertaining are the anecdotes on the inter-Allied skulduggery on how to sneak in first and grab a prize before your rivals (i.e. between the US, UK and French science/engineering teams), which meant occasionally you got there just as the German forces were pulling out (occasionally before). Regards, ...geoff

Careful there are no 'nasties' hiding in/around those boxes.

Re: French testing of German aircraft
Naahhh, no worries! The silverfish have been eaten by the poisonous spiders, who have been eaten by the rats who are the size of cats, who have been eaten by the poisonous snakes, who have been eaten by the Kookaburras, who got into the garage through the same holes as the rats and snakes. I hope!!!!

Re: French testing of German aircraft
Dear All,
I have the book to which Laurent refers: Les avions allemands aux couleurs françaises, Tome 2, by Philippe RICCO. It is a photo book with somewhat limited text, although more than just captions. The number of aircraft covered is extensive: Klemm RAAB-Katzensyein Kl Ic Schwalbe II Rohrbach Ro 10 "Romar" Planeurs Ju 52 (AAC-I "Toucan" Ju 86 Ju 88 (AAB-I) Ju 188 Ju 488 (Latécoère) Klemm L25 Klemm L32 Klemm L35B Bf 108 (Nord N-1000, 1001, 1002 "Pingouin) Bf 109 Bf 110 Me 163 Me 208 (Nord N-1100, 1101, 1104, 1110 "Noralpha", "Ramier") Me 262 Si 204 (NC-700, 701, 702 "Martinet" Zeppelin ZSO 523 (SNCASO) DFS 108-14 SG-38 DFS 108-49 Grnau Baby (Nord 1300 "Norbaby") DFS 108-30 Kranich DFS 108-68 Weihe (VMA 200 "Milan") DFS 108-70 Miese (Nord 2000 "Norplane") Göppingen Gö 1 Wolf Göppingen Gö 3 Minimoa Göppingen Gö 4 Goevier München Mü 13 Schleicher Rhonbussard Autres planeurs Bölkow Do 27 Do 28 Do 228 Do 328 VFW 614 Répliques Planeurs Ar 234 Do 24 Do 217 Fw 190 "long nez" Go 146 Gö IV Goevier et PM 200 He 219 Ju 87 Motors allemands sur avions françaises ATAR Arsenal de l’Aéronautique : DFS 346 et statoréacteurs SNCASE: ailes volantes et hélicoptères Secteur spatial et Engins Additions et corrections au Tome I AEG G.IV Albatros D.1 Fokker D.VII He 111 He 162 He 177 He 274 Junkers F13 Junkers J9 Pfalz D.XII Zeppelin C.IV-I "L'avion mystère" At the end is a color photo and color profile section. I purchased my copy from Lela Presse, the publisher, about 2003. The website back then was www.avionsbateaux.com. I don't have Tome 1. Regards, Richard |

Re: French testing of German aircraft
Roger Receveau's account of testing the He 274 and Do 335 is reproduced (in French) on Jean Houben's wonderful site "histoires d'aviateurs.." - if a Frenchman has flown it, there's a report here...
The French even tested (on the ground) the explosive bolt system designed to jettison the Do 335's rear prop for pilot bail out - needless to say, "it proved totally ineffective.." http://aviateurs.e-monsite.com/pages...bizartres.html the Lela Presse website is http://www.avions-bateaux.com/ they have an NC 900 title in preparation |
