Hi Stig. Not a book but there are many references to Pascoe and Sadler on the net including these. Just go down the pages.
It looks like 2 of the Nieuport batch A6790--6798 were 17s (6792 and 6795), the others were 23s.

This is a Nieuport 27 N5778
It was heavily photographed when accepted by the Americans in 1918.
There are at least three photos known.

Ouch! thanks Stig I was sure it was a 3 but you can see it's a 5 in the second photo.
I've always had trouble with 3s and 5s in this font especially at a distance. The 5 has a gap on the top stroke.
Both are on these Nieuport rudders..........
