Wüstenotstaffel 1

Hi

Does anyone know the original Staka of this unit at the time of its formation and who - if anyone - succeeded him?

TIA

Adam

Re: Wüstenotstaffel 1

According to our files, this odd unit had only one known Staka:

KROSEBERG, Heinz.
(DOB: 23.02.99).
05.42 Hptm., in 1. Wüstennotstaffel (to 12.05.42 – MIA).
19.06.42 Hptm.(d.R.), awarded Ritterkreuz, Staka Wüstennotstaffel.

Not much known about this guy. Anyone have anything to add?

Thanks for the follow up. As far as I know, Doug, Kroseberg was promoted to Maj at the same time as his award for the Ritterkreuz. Unfortunately I don't have a direct source for this, just a hand written note on file.

Re: Wüstenotstaffel 1

Hi guys

For what it's worth, Kroseburg's loss followed an action that had resulted in nine troop-laden Ju52s of TG1, flying from Crete to Derna, and a Bf110, being shot down by Kittyhawks of 250 Squadron and Beaufighters of 252 Squadron. 175 German soldiers were lost and 47 others rescued from the sea. As established, Kroseburg took off in the Fi156 (although one report says Fw.58) and reportedly dropped his lifejacket to a group of survivors. The cause of his loss is unknown.

Cheers
Brian
