F/Lt Jimmy Davies DFC 79 Squadron
Hi guys
Currently perusing Heroes of Fighter Command: Kent by Rupert Matthews. On page 39, apparently referring to a combat on 8 June 1940, he states: ".... Davies found himself faced by six aircraft he did not recognise at all. The black crosses on the newcomers wings were only too clear, however, and Davies threw himself into an attack. One of the strange aircraft went down in flames, and the others scattered. He later identfied the aircraft as He115 light bombers. These were however naval aircraft and German records later revealed that none were involved in the fighting throughout Dunkirk." The Squadron ORB credits him with half a Heinkel 111, unless that was a separate combat. Any ideas? Possibly RAF/FAA/French aircraft misidentified? Not too many floatplanes around then. Hi Bruce
Yes, I have that, but would have thought Davies was able to recognise a He111! Hence the query. Cheers Brian |
