Ju 88 with duck emblem

At eBay here is a picture of a crashed Ju 88 in winter camouflage. There is a duck emblem, which appears familiar, but which I cannot find a unit for. It could be a recon emblem? To add to the confusion the rear of the photo appears to indicate that the crash was at Orscha (Belarus) in January 1941? The uniforms of those in the photo certainly do not help. Those in the cockpit could be German, but those outside appear Soviet? They are probably all Soviet, but then the writing on the rear is in German!!

Can anyone cure my headache!
Ian

Re: Ju 88 with duck emblem

It's look like 4./KG 76 emblem. And the guys in the cockpit sport rather German caps. Those outside may simply use Soviet caps and anything else they could find to protect from cold.
The unit operated from Orscha since September 1941 until June 1942, with a short break in the second part of December 1941.

Best,
Maciej

Re: Ju 88 with duck emblem

Hi,

it was emblem of II./KG76 not only of 4./KG76. Introduced in late summer 1940 by Walter Storp.

Regards

Robert

Re: Ju 88 with duck emblem

Thanks to both of you. The reproduction in my copy of Ketley and Rolfe wasn’t very clear, so I missed this one. I assume the date should be January 1942 and the author of the caption on the rear had simply got the year wrong..perhaps caused by the cold!

Cheers

Ian

No not the cold. I for one, when January comes every year, have written in my working capacity the previous year some 4 to 5 000 times. Trying to get the brain to understand that it is a new year is no problem, but my hands are still writing the previous year no matter what I do... and it takes a couple of weeks before my hands follow the brain...
A really strange battle I have performed for the past 40 years!

Cheers
Stig
