2Lt. John A. Penning of Sharon, Massachusetts - KIA on May 24th, 1944 in P-38J-10-LO 42-67446
On August 21st, 1942 John A. Penning of Sharon, Massachusetts left his home for flight training as Army air cadet in Santa Ana, California. He later graduated and appointed to 2Lt. During service with the 15. USAAF he was last based at Triolo, Italy and flew with 49. Squadron, 14. Fighter Group.
He was last seen flying low close by Heiligenkreuz, southwest of Vienna, Austria on May 24th, 1944. His P-38J-10-LO 42-67446 was trailing smoke and eventually even fire. The plane crashed and he did not manage to bail out in time. 2Lt. John H. Pennings remains were first interred at Heiligenkreuz cemetery in grave IV/120, row 5 and on June 29th, 1948 evacuated to US Military cemetery in Cip Liege, Belgium for reburial. The crashplace was recently located. I am looking for any details regarding this pilot and his relatives. While scanning the net I've found MACR 5186 so far showing his last address in Massachusetts. Any help is greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance. Regards, K. |

He was John Henry Penning, born November 10, 1920 in Boston, Massachusetts. Find a Grave says he is buried in Rock Ridge Cemetery, Sharon, Massachusetts but perhaps that is just a marker, not his grave. Parents were James and Anita Penning.
