Operation Skate 14.-15. 10. 1944

Hallo Community

I am looking for more information about Operation Skate, the attack on Braunschweig on the night of October 14th / 15th, 1944.
Of particular interest would be details of the participating Pathfinder Mosquitos of the RAF 5th Bomb Group,
- their appearance,
- markings and, if possible,
- their loading lists and the loss of Planes and crews that night.

Thank you for your help

Re: Operation Skate 14.-15. 10. 1944

54 Base sent 1 Mosquito with Controller W/C Woodroffe
627 Sqn sent 7 Mosquitos =
2 Deputy Controllers/Markers
4 Markers
1 Photo Recce to record results

All bombed and all returned safely

The two deputies/markers (DZ643-O and DZ633-D) and two of the markers (DZ641-C and DZ640-U) = 2 x B.22 RTI

The other two markers (DZ631-W and KB345-J) = 2 x No.7 & 2 x No.21 RTI M.flash

Photo recce (DZ530-N) = 2 x 500lb bombs

Personal plea - please do not use American titles (5th Bomb Group) when referring to RAF units, it's just horrible

Martin

Martin

Can you please expand on what 54 Base was?
A base unit or did RAF bases/airfields carry numbers as well?
Never come across the latter though....

Cheers
Stig

Stig,
There was a bit about 54 Base on the website of our colleagues: http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/sho...4-54-Base-1944

Regards,
Leendert

Thanks Leendert

Now that I know what it was, I found references to them in one of my books.

Cheers
