#Armyhistory #TuskegeeAirmen #USArmy #WWII
Herbert H. Jones Jr. a former member of the famed Tuskegee Airme passed away this week. Jones had a career in aviation that spanned more than 60 years.
Born in Washington, DC, Herbert attended Dunbar Senior High School and later attended Howard University for two years before serving in World War II.
Mr. Jones became a true pioneer by owning and operating one of the black owned airlines, flying charters between the U.S. and the Caribbean. Jones joined the Army Air Corps and had his primary flight training at Kessler Field at Tuskegee, Alabama. He went on to fly in combat with the 332nd Fighter Group. Commonly known as the “Red Tails, the unit received a Distinguished Unit Citation for a mission on 24 March 1945 when they escorted B-17s during a raid on a tank factory near Berlin, and successfully engaged Messerschmitt Me 262, a German jet fighter.
In his lifetime Mr. Jones trained over 200 black aviators many who later served in the military. In 2007 Mr. Jones, along with all the other Tuskegee Airmen, was awarded a Congressional Gold Medal for their service in WWII.
