SPIETH, Albert. (DOB 26.07.15 in Altbach, Krs. Esslingen). (R, DKG). (n.d.) a glider pilot in his youth. 16.04.36 entered the Luftwaffe and began training with 3./Fl.Ers.Abt. 15 initially becoming a mechanic and gunner. 15.09.36 trf to Stab I./St.G. 165. 01.11.38 trf to Fl.Ausb.Rgt. 23 for pilot training. 01.09.39 trf to FFS C Fürth. 03.01.40 trf to Grosse KFS 3. 31.05.40 trf to BFS 5. 27.06.40 trf to Erg.St./KG51. c.003.08.40 trf to 3./KG 51. 24.04.41 his Ju 88 A-5 (9K+JL) developed engine trouble and was forced down E of Euboea, but was soon rescued. 08.12.41 Fw., awarded the Ehrenpokal. 01.05.42 promo to Ofw. 16.07.42 Ofw., awarded the DKG. 16.02.43 trf to 10./KG 51 and flew some missions against partisans. 24.03.43 Ofw. and pilot in 3./KG 51, awarded the Ritterkreuz, mainly for distinguishing himself during the heavy and difficult operations around Stalingrad. 04.10.43 KIA – during a nighttime Soviet air raid on Bobruisk when a bomb struck the troop billets. Credited with 303 missions including 5 missions against partisans.
