He219 being assembled at Udvar-Hazy
If you live near Washington, stop by this week at Udvar-Hazy as the He219 is being assembled on the museum floor. It would have been to complex to assemble in the restoration shop and move it to the museum floor, so work is being done in the German aircraft area. The Fw190 and Ar234 had to be moved. The wing was dropped into the fuselage yesterday and work continues to set the landing gear up. Work will continue this week.
I have some photos to add but have no room to add photos on this forum. I cannot figure out how to remove or manage what I already posted. Look at LRG or WW2Aircraft for an image of it. Tony |

Thanks Rudi. Been looking for that feature for a long time.
This image was taken Tuesday. By tomorrow it is supposed to be complete. On Wednesday the landing gear was extended but no wheels yet. Tony Last edited by Tony Kambic; 4th December 2019 at 15:23. |

Re: He219 being assembled at Udvar-Hazy
Thanks for posting those pictures. I guess the long delay has been due to the time taken to restore the wing. Overall, that is great work just to reassemble that machine! I presume that the process has been recorded in detail? Cheers

Re: He219 being assembled at Udvar-Hazy
Actually the wing has been done for a number of years. There is always some activity at NASM that pulls staff from one project to another and right now lots of work is being done in the building on the mall in Washington. It is a revitalization project since the building was done before 1976.
That said, another thing delaying it was the discovery of the He219 in Denmark that provided some insight into the radar dipoles that were missing from the NASM He219. A set has been manufactured and fitted and will go on the one at NASM. Work is continuing of final painting of the control surfaces and some of the engine panels. The props were finished a long time ago and need to be brought out of storage. In the two images added here are the front angle view showing the nose wheel on and the radar dipoles still in the shop. Hi Tony! Thank you for posting those images. It is impressive to see the care that goes into the Smithsonian work!
