Identity of a captured Spitfire?
I downloaded these photos from eBay a couple of years ago and have just now tweaked and enlarged them. I would like to know the Spit's identity, but any information or observation would be most welcome.
Thanks, Jim http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....pictureid=1112 http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....pictureid=1113 http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....pictureid=1114 |

Re: Identity of a captured Spitfire?
I think these are pictures of one of the Spitfires captured in the in the Battle of Britain in 1940. I have seen many pictures of this plane which appears to have had it British markings overpainted.

Re: Identity of a captured Spitfire?
This was P/O J. R. Caister DFM shot down over the channel 6 Sept. 1940 by Hptm. von Bonin I./JG54 and landed in France. Caister was one of the older pilots born 1906.
Von Bonin was killed in Russia 15 Dec. 1943. Regards Nick |

Re: Identity of a captured Spitfire?
There are other pictures of this Spitfire that show the odd Luftwaffe markings. This was on the old LEMB website.

Re: Identity of a captured Spitfire?
Alex. Michael Payne did some research on X4260 some years ago; she was sent to the Test Centre at Rechlin from JG54 re-painted Grey 02, the "sqiggles" probably one of the Greys 71/74. JG54 had some unusual colour schemes thru the war including in Russia.
I./Gruppe were mottled and II. had criss-crossing lines. The Spitfire came down near the airfield at Guines. Nick |
