Heinz Ewald

Hi guys

Heinz Ewald was apparently shot down by German Flak on the Eastern Front. I believe something has been written about his incident. Would someone enlighten me with date and details etc, please?

Many thanks
Brian

Hello Brian

From my thumbnail biography of Ewald: "On 1 March [1945] he shot down a USAAF P-51 fighter [at around 13:00 in the Stuhlweissenburg area as his 71st victory] but was then shot down by German Flak in Bf 109 G-10 "White 10" (W.Nr. 610 964) over Veszprém. He was forced to bale out wounded again and was lucky to escape further injury when during his descent he was fired on by SS troops believing him to be a Russian airman." If I recall correctly his comrades later arrived and confronted the SS men in a none too pleasant postscript. I hope this helps and hopefully someone else can add additional details.

Horrido!

Leo

Re: Heinz Ewald

Hi Brian,

Esau's autobiography dedicated 4 pages to this incident, however it is all in German. If you contact me off board with your address i'll photocopy the pages and send them to you, all the best, David.
