Re: German Air gunner Kills
Schnellmeyer....
It seems we do have a nice topic for a book here...a subject not deeply covered it seems. Chris, When one is fighting for its own life...but I quite do agree with you...not so many LW airmen claimed Mosquitos...very few Air Gunners claimed Mossies too. The P-61 claim was indeed amazing.... NICE TOPIC guys! All the best Adriano |

German Air gunner Kills
Hi guys
Neil Page has written a very nice article concerning when Unteroffizier Fabinger who was the tail gunner of He 177 A-5 "F8 + AN" (W.Nr. 550 077) of 2./KG 40 flown by Hauptmann Stolle engaged P-61 A-10 (42-5591) of the 422nd Night Fighter Squadron flown by 2/Lt Lewis Gordon on 15 August 1944: http://falkeeins.blogspot.com/2011/0...7-griffon.html Horrido! Re: German Air gunner Kills
Hi Adriano , yes I think this topic would make a good book .I have always found it very interesting to read about Luftwaffe aircrews , the pilots always seem to get plenty of coverage but never the other crew members .

Re: German Air gunner Kills
Gentlemen,
German air gunners had indeed receive little attention. I think there was one German bomber crew that was credited with 11 air to air kills. I forgot the names of them. Edward L. Hsiao |

Re: German Air gunner Kills
I have been researching the Flugbuch of Bordfunker Oberfeldwebel Martin Heinze (DKiG 28th April 1943, EP 15th October 1942). He flew in Bf 110s from 1940 through to 1944 and has two confirmed kills while flying with 6./ZG 1:
1. Spitfire near Trapani, Tunisia on 26th April 1943 - fits perfectly with Spitfire Mk IX EN294 of 72 Squadron, flown by Pilot Officer F. Malan, who was last seen chasing a Bf 110 and posted Missing in Action. 2. B-24 Liberator near Gmunden, Austria on 23rd February 1944 shot down using MG 81 (twin machine-guns). The USAAF 376th Bomber Group lost seven B-24s in that area on that day so a match is quite possible.

Re: German Air gunner Kills
Interesting topic indeed. I can contribute that, during the research of the Nachtjagd Combat Archive series, Rod and I have identified 13 individual BF/BS with one or more Abschüsse to their credit. These will all be detailed in the series, plus new short bios on all of them.
Cheers, Theo |
