RAF Liberator, Black Swan, India, 1944.

Hi!

I am looking for the serial number and unit for the RAF B-24, India, 1944
RAF no 1673 HCU used at that time, Liberator Mark III, VI, And IX.

But i think The Black Swan is a Liberator B MK VI (B-24G/H/ (J)?
It might also be a Liberator from no 159?

Re: RAF Liberator, Black Swan, India, 1944.

I59/S was KH252 from some time after 7.10.44 until it transferred to 358 Sq. This must be a strong contender. There are a lot of serial/code links dot 159 Sq in Air Britain's tome on the Liberator in RAF & Commonwealth service, including at least one X, but that was the only S I've found in a quick search. (That's not to claim that I couldn't have missed one or more.)

This was B-24J. Definitely not G, or H.

KH252 was a B-24J-CF. B M.VIs in this delivery batch were built from a range of batch numbers, but were modified to a consistent -30 standard in Kentucky (most likely Modification Center for this series.)

KH252 might be a potential candidate. Gonna dig more in to it.

I will try to get the records from 1673 HCU, AIR 29/614/7 that covers October 1943 to November 1944.
Before 1673 HCU was disbanded and adopted to no 159 and other units.
Maybe the records can show the A/C inventory for example?

Re: RAF Liberator, Black Swan, India, 1944.

I very much doubt whether a 1673 HCU aircraft would carry individual nose art. There's none to be seen on the photos I've seen - there may well of course be more photos around! It was however common on 159 Sq., where several examples are known. In the Air Britain book, most but not all 159 Sq examples are given with code letters (though not all) but there was only one S that I could find, and it did fall into the right period.

Re: RAF Liberator, Black Swan, India, 1944.

After reading on rquirk's website there is alsoThe EV911 S, B-24J-10-CF, ex 42-64269
due to when i read about Bill Anderson, he mentioned that he in October 1944 as captain for S for Sugar, KH252 S where going on a new mission. But EV911 S was also used earlier. A potential? And i started to wonder if Black Swan might be code "B" and not "S".?

I need look up Liberator in RAF & Commonwealth service.

Hello,

For Matt Poole's views on Liberator KH252, go to:

https://www.yumpu.com/en/document/vi...ert-quirks-/55

Hit READ, go to p.114 (see also EV911, p.70). (Caveat: The material available here, is not Matt's latest research on the subject. Best to contact him personally for the latest).

NB. Matt has now removed this material from Robert Quirk's site.

Robert Quirk has serious health issues and for the present his site will remain available. Long-term, who knows?

Col.

Re: RAF Liberator, Black Swan, India, 1944.

Hello all,

Col, thanks for Matt Poole's document link.

I'm very sorry to hear about Robert Quirk's condition, and wish him all the best.

Anderson's 1st mission was in 'S' (according to landing time in the orb).
Some 159 Sqn's Liberators (from my old list):
Coded S: AL537, AL620, BZ922, KH252
Coded X: AL638, BZ836, BZ842, EV960, EV993, KH170, KH276, KH408, KL677. KH247 also listed (possibly wrong).

"Black Swan" was Mcn 30-?5?, probably in the KH___ range.

Long time ago I researched Mcn 43 series only (corrections are welcome).

Re: RAF Liberator, Black Swan, India, 1944.

Is the date of his first operation compatible with the arrival of KH252 in theatre (7.10.44)?

If not then EV911 could indeed be more appropriate. Oughton (Air Britain) list EV911 as serving with 159 but gives no code except later with 356 Sq as G.
