Me 262 base?

George Preddy's brother, Bill, from the 339th FG and another 339th pilot were shot down on Apr.17.1945. They were shot down over the Budweis airport in CZ. The unit was German AA artillery flag 302th Ersatz, 11th regiment. This artillery was there from: 10.01.1942- to: 04.30.1945.

262s were based there and that's what they were chasing. Does anyone have any clue what 262 unit(s) was based there in this time? Tough because so many units were retreating into CZ from German and Austria.

Re: Me 262 base?

John,

during mid April 1945 elements of NAGr 14, NAGr 16 and II./KG(J) 30 were based at Budweis with Bf 109G and Fw 189A but no jets.

Re: Me 262 base?

Hi John,

Here are two remotely possible connections between Budweis and units using Me 262s:

a) Regarding Erganzungskampfgeschwader (J),

www.ww2.dk/air/kampf/ergkgj.html

"1. Staffel at Budweis?, 2.45-2.45 ..."

b) According to deZeng's Luftwaffe Airfields, in April 1945 Budweis had "elements of 1./Flugzeuguberfuhrungsgruppe Sudost", perhaps to ferry manufactured Me 262s out of Budweis.

best regards,

Jim Geens
