Horridoh again
Hello,
The significance of the expression "Horrido" is well known, as this was the cry of German pilots after shooting down an enemy. In Berlin I have found a house, ca 80-100 years old, with the text "Horridoh" with an additional "h" spelled in German "Fraktur"-style on the house facade. Deer antlers are also put up. The house is situated in northern Pankow (a borough in Berlin) and is in a worn down condition but inhabited. Does any one know about this house and why Horridoh is spellt on its facade? Could Horridoh have another significance than the earlier mentioned? Kind regards, Olof |

Hi.
The call "Horrido" or "Horridoh" (both terms are correct according to the German dictionary) is NOT invented by German fighter pilots or even the Luftwaffe. It has been a greeting or a call between huntingmen since ancient times and developped from the expression "Ho Rüd' ho", which means that the hounds should start seeking. Since about 1740, Horrido is known by the Prussian military, when Frederick the Great recruited huntingmen for his army, serving in a special reconnaisance unit. Maybe this house you are according to was a hunting lodge in earlier days. Hope this helps Robert |
